Finalist project for the OICE 2024 Awards, “Urban Planning and Regeneration” category
Finalist project for the 2025 The Plan Award, " Culture - Future" category
The Bosco della Musica is one of the most ambitious and significant projects for the city of Milan. This urban regeneration project in Rogoredo, in the south-east of Milan, was designed to transform a previously derelict area into a genuine green space, housing the new campus of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire of Milan.
The concept draws inspiration from the woodland that already grows in this area. Hence the idea of designing a complex that settles organically onto the ground: four volumes reminiscent of leaves blown by the wind onto the ground. From these volumes emerge fluid pathways and spaces where the boundary between interior and exterior dissolves, in a continuous dialogue between architecture and nature.
The project comprises four buildings, each with a distinct function: the symbolic heart of the project is the 400-seat auditorium, with walls clad in ceramic shingles in seven different colours; a university hall of residence with 200 beds; the former Chemistry building, which will become the home of the Conservatoire’s school of rock, pop and jazz; and finally, a multi-purpose space that will house the school of electronic and experimental music, as well as a café, restaurant and communal areas. In addition to these, there will be a summer arena for open-air concerts and car parks equipped with charging points for electric vehicles, green roofs and flower-filled lawns that promote biodiversity, contributing to a modern, welcoming and environmentally conscious campus model.
Every aspect of the project has been designed to reduce environmental impact and promote the responsible use of resources.
The new premises of the G. Verdi Conservatoire in Milan serve as an example of how culture can be a driving force for urban regeneration and social cohesion, offering innovative and sustainable spaces for musical education and community interaction.
