Rimini’s new Municipal Swimming Pool has been created to provide the city with a contemporary sports centre, designed not only for swimming but also as a place for socialising, inclusion and wellbeing. Set amongst the greenery of Don Tonino Bello Park, it meets a long-standing need in the local area, expanding the range of facilities dedicated to sport and leisure.
The complex comprises a main 10-lane pool, flanked by two pools dedicated to aqua fitness and introductory swimming lessons for children. The facility also houses a 150-seat grandstand, spaces reserved for sports clubs, a fitness area, a café, a play area and a sports shop, offering a comprehensive experience for athletes, families and visitors.
The building comprises two main sections, separated by a seismic joint: a single-storey side wing and a multi-storey central wing housing the pools. The reinforced concrete structure, with inverted beam foundations connected by raft foundations, is complemented by a laminated timber roof system that allows for large spans without intermediate columns, ensuring spacious, light-filled environments and full usability of the spaces.
The large glazed surfaces, designed to connect the interior spaces with the surrounding park, allow natural light to flood in whilst providing a constant visual connection with the landscape.
The external envelope features a ventilated façade in Zintek® zinc-titanium, in two shades of blue: the colour scheme evokes the movement and lightness of the aquatic environment, helping to define the building’s character.
Rimini’s new Municipal Swimming Pool is now a key public facility for the neighbourhood and the city as a whole: an open space that promotes sport, wellbeing and social interaction, strengthening the bond between architecture, landscape and the community.
