Finalist project at the Ecca Awards 2025 in the "Prepainted Metal Envelope" category
The project is located in the San Tomaso de' Calvi district of Bergamo, as part of a large redevelopment project that also includes the adjacent park, infusing new vitality and identity and establishing itself as a landmark in an open public space. The gym is designed to become a landmark where leisure and sports activities find their place and become generators of encounters and recreation. The project aims to respond to a dual need: to create a building with a strong iconographic charge that, through dynamic forms, is able to emerge and stand out in the urban context as a landmark, while at the same time defining a functional and welcoming environment that embodies a contemporary vision of leisure and sporting activities. The gym is therefore designed to meet the needs of sports associations, thanks to its basketball and volleyball courts and spaces that comply with CONI regulations, but it is also open to the entire community, striking a harmonious balance between aesthetics and function. The project is the result of a careful study of the distribution system, aimed at ensuring differentiated routes based on user types. The gym consists of two playing fields designed with flexibility to adapt to different needs, a grandstand for spectators and a direct entrance reserved for the public. The interiors of this environment are defined and punctuated by exposed laminated wood bracing, which transforms the supporting structure into a design element as well as a functional one. This design choice highlights wood as the main material, creating a visual connection with the external environment and recalling the naturalness of the surrounding landscape.
