The design of the new Liceo Scientifico in Sesto Fiorentino is based on three main objectives: to create a centre of higher education in a strategic location; to provide the school with a safe, efficient and innovative facility for teaching; and to contribute to the economic development of the local area through the creation of new jobs.
The building is divided into three distinct blocks: two dedicated to teaching activities and one to the sports hall. This layout allows for harmonious integration with the cycle path, footpaths, road network and the surrounding green spaces. The proximity of the university laboratories on the eastern side – characterised by a rigorous and functional architectural style – guided the decision to prioritise large glazed surfaces on this façade, enhancing natural lighting and the comfort of the interior spaces.
The complex is arranged over three storeys around the south courtyard and over two storeys around the north courtyard. The rotation of the building volumes creates panoramic terraces overlooking the large glazed areas, providing high-quality outdoor spaces and strengthening the visual connection with the landscape. The project also includes a sports hall and a flexible auditorium, expanding the range of uses for the facility. The access system has been designed to allow communal spaces to remain open even outside school hours, making them available to the wider community.
Particular attention has been paid to environmental considerations and sustainability. The new Liceo Scientifico in Sesto Fiorentino is intended to be a contemporary learning environment, demonstrating how architecture can improve quality of life, promote people’s wellbeing and create spaces that are open to both the school and the wider community.
