The Whale

The reconstruction project for the N. Sauro Primary School in Brugnera represents a significant transformation for the local community. This new primary school was built following the partial demolition of the existing school complex. The aim was to create a new school complex that meets the needs of innovative teaching methods, whilst also adhering to the design principles for a NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) complex.
The building’s design evokes a marine environment, with large openings that resemble the shape of a fish emerging from the sea. These expansive windows create a striking visual impact for the pupils, inviting them to step into a ‘big blue sea’ – a carefully chosen metaphor designed to stimulate the imagination and curiosity of young people.
The structure was built using XLAM, a choice that not only ensures strength and sustainability but also allows for the creation of bright and pleasant spaces.
The sheet metal cladding on the timber structure is a bright blue, a colour chosen for its vibrancy and its ability to instil energy and positivity. Finally, the four large openings help to illuminate the communal spaces inside the building, creating a stimulating and welcoming environment for learning.
